World Water Week 2024
ReForMit concluded its first stakeholder consultation at World Water Week in Stockholm on 29 August 2024. It was a combined onsite and online event to engage with participants from science, policy and practice. The ReForMit team highlighted the importance of forest systems for limiting global warming and implications for biosphere functions related to freshwater and biodiversity. To lay the foundation for co-creation and co-design of global scenarios for forest-based climate change mitigation, the team presented its approach to modelling and assessment of social-ecological resilience. It also presented the results of an initial stakeholder survey that gave some indications of stakeholders’ top priorities related to forest system resilience and governance challenges.
FAO, UNEP and the Swedish Forest Agency participated in a vivid panel discussion on how to safeguard forest resilience in a changing climate. The main remaining knowledge gaps as well as policy and institutional barriers were discussed. The panellists gave examples of how they address these issues in their organisations and good examples were provided from around the world. Understanding the forest-water system was considered key in advancing forest resilience, as well as coordination and collaboration across sectors, governance levels and organisations. The session ended with onsite moderated group discussions and knowledge sharing. The recording of the full session can be watched at the World Water Week session site, after logging in.
